ProWriters Philanthropy: Love, Vaughn Foundation

ProWriters Is Proud to Support Charities like the Love, Vaughn Foundation

Most people know ProWriters for the support services we offer to agents and brokers. But we’re also committed to supporting our community. That’s why ProWriters is a proud sponsor of the Love, Vaughn Foundation.

According to the Data Resource Center for Child & Adolescent Health, more than 13 million children in the U.S. have two or more health conditions. The Love, Vaughn Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission to help children and their families who grapple with childhood diseases and developmental challenges.

We’re proud to support that mission by offering our time and resources as well as assistance in raising funds. The work Love, Vaughn does holds a special place in the hearts of our ProWriters family, having had personal experience with a child affected by cancer and other medical conditions.

Remembering Vaughn

Vaughn, the namesake of the Love, Vaughn Foundation, smiles at the camera as he walks in his wheelchair. The Love, Vaughn Foundation was inspired by the life of Vaughn William Thornton. Vaughn faced an uphill battle from the start, having been born with multiple conditions including lung and kidney disease. He spent his first three months of life in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Northwestern and Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

At 10 months old, Vaughn was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Doctors also discovered he had cysts that covered 90% of his lungs. And after months of chemotherapy, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. On April 20, 2014, after a long battle with many conditions and diseases, Vaughn passed away at the age of 4.

Vaughn was as exceptional as he was inspirational. He never stopped fighting despite the challenges he was faced with. He also never felt sorry for himself, bringing joy to everyone in his life with his infectious positivity. Because of his conditions, he was never able to walk or talk. But Vaughn’s story is one that can speak to all of us.

What Love, Vaughn Does

The Love, Vaughn Foundation honors Vaughn’s memory by providing support for children who face many of the same challenges he did. In addition to the 13 million children with two or more health conditions in the United States, more than 11 million children across the country have at least one functional difficulty. Love, Vaughn endeavors to support these children and their families in any way they can.

The Love, Vaughn Foundation helps in many ways. They host events to raise money and awareness, working tirelessly to use the funds to make the largest impact possible. The Foundation also engages in programs ranging from toy drives for children to music programs for kids during long-term hospital stays. All of these activities are centered on advancing the Foundation’s mission statement in Vaughn’s memory:

The Love, Vaughn Foundation’s mission is to help children and their families affected by childhood diseases and developmental challenges.

With the funds raised to date, the Love, Vaughn Foundation has provided toys to children at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), toiletries to doting parents who are unable to leave their child’s bedside, and they’re now raising funds to provide a music therapy cart to CHOP.

CHOP offers music therapy to all patients, free of charge, which is entirely dependent on philanthropy. As CHOP is currently over capacity, a second music cart would allow more patients access to music therapy on a daily basis. This cart will be equipped with the latest technology and instruments for CHOP patients of all ages to enjoy. Music has an enormously positive impact on some of the toughest cases that children face and can be an effective coping mechanism for many.

Love, Vaughn Events

To support children and families in need, the Love, Vaughn Foundation hosts a number of events throughout the year. These events raise money and awareness and help the Foundation continue its mission. Here are a few of the events the Foundation has been involved in.

Annual Holiday Toy Drive

Every year, the Love, Vaughn Foundation hosts an annual toy drive during the holiday season. Their 2018 holiday toy drive sent over 1,000 toys to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, bringing some holiday spirit to the children and families who needed it most.

Love, Vaughn Tennis Event

In September 2018, the Foundation hosted a tennis fundraiser at Aronimink Golf Club’s Tennis Center in Davids Road Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. After an overwhelming response of love and support, the Foundation raised $95,000.
